Welcome to Ontonagon

About Ontonagon

The Village of Ontonagon was founded in 1843, and is located where the Ontonagon River, empties into Lake Superior. The Village is the county seat.

The Ontonagon River has provided for the shipping of copper, lumber, and now supports a wonderful fishing industry.  The river, along with the nearby lakes, offer fishing for walleye, northern pike, trout, musky, bass, and perch.

The Village is home to a full-service 38-slip marina which includes a boat hoist, boat launch ramps, a service building, a fish-cleaning station, and a paved parking and boat storage area.

The virgin timber woods in and around Ontonagon support a wide variety of birds and animals alike. Ruffed grouse, ducks, and geese abound. Animals in the wild here include black bear, white-tailed deer, and coyote as well as snowshoe hares and cottontail rabbits

Summers provide sandy beaches, playgrounds, picnic areas, camping and a golf course.

There is also the Ontonagon Theater of Performing Arts.

Winter provides Ice skating, ice hockey, and miles of snowmobile trails that run through the Western Upper Peninsula.

In addition, the Porcupine Mountains have some of the highest vertical drops in the Midwest for the downhill skier.

Nordic skiers will love the cross country trails throughout the area.
